Step-by-step VMware Cloud Foundation 4.3 design and install vROPS

In my previous post Step-by-step VMware Cloud Foundation 4.3 design and install WSA we have completed deployment of VMware vRealize workspace one access, now we are ready to start deployment of vRealize operations manager aka vROPs.

Its very important we understand that flow, first we installed vRealize lifecycle manager, did a repository sync and created a global environment for workspace one access. Workspace one access will deliver identity and access management in VMware cloud foundation environment, as it is installed in a cross region nsx segment we can leverage it on each site which is part of same VCF deployment.

But before we start discussing how we are going to consume these services, we should complete the deployment of vRealize suite components. Next in line is vRealize operations manager.

    What is vRealize operations manager?

Whether its IT world or non IT world, we need some mechanism to to provide visibility as in what are we using what we are not using. A simple example from everyone's day to day life is monthly budget.

We need to see how much is our income and how much we are spending and whether we are able to make any saving or we are going under debt. How do we do it? By finding our own mechanisms, such as creating expense and income statement.

Vmware describes it "VMware vRealize Operations is a unified, AI-powered self-driving IT operations management platform for private, hybrid and multi-cloud environments. vRealize Operations is offered as a cloud or on-premise offering."

In simple word, vROPs is the operations management tool which provides us visibility about our IT but not limited to technical but commercial part to some extent, such as ROI.

    Why do we need vROPs?

Once you know about the product, second question comes in your mind do we need it? Answer is very simple it totally depends on your use case and the most important question is do you have an active mechanism which can provide same level of visibility of your environment which vROPs can then you dont need it but if you dont then your answer would be purely based on if you want.......

This blank can be filled with the use cases.

    Performance optimization.

One of the many features vROPs has is predictive analytics complemented with AI driving actions to automatically balance workloads, improve consolidation ratios, optimize and rightsize workloads and proactively avoid contention, which eventually optimizes performance.

One may think why do we need it if I have Distributed resource scheduler aka DRS, well because DRS only balances if it sees resource contention on a host, however it cannot perform actions such as right sizing a workload. Which becomes very useful when you are running workloads on cloud and consumption based billing model.

    Efficient Capacity and Cost Management

In our datacenters when we do solutioning for a greenfield environment we do sizing based on various factors but that doesn't reflect the actual usage of the sized workload, as nothing is live. Once sized environment runs for some time we get data to ascertain how much out of sized capacity is actually utilized.

Usually at the time of refresh if we have data to ascertain what consolidation ratio we can use, based on what we have used, what is our change rate and what would be our future forecasting, combined with saving in terms of OPEX helps us making informed decision.

vROPs does exactly that "Reduce cost and improve efficiency with real-time, ML-based capacity and cost analytics. Deliver optimal consolidation and proactive forecasting and planning using a real-time, forward-looking capacity analytics engine. vRealize Operations directly correlates capacity and cost analytics to visualize cost savings opportunities and accelerate decision making."

    Intelligent Remediation

When we calculate the Opex, most of us tend to ignore efforts which will be involved in troubleshooting a technical issue without availability of actionable intel. Imagine first scenario where administrator needs to troubleshoot an issue after it has surfaced and he needs to login into each system to start looking at logs to even start investigation as in what went wrong and with logical troubleshooting he needs fairly good amount of time to reach to a solution.

Where in second scenario where same administrator as access to a tool which correlate metrics and logs with unified visibility from apps to infrastructure, which provides him with actionable insights which results in faster resolution.

Saving time is saving money, as time is money.

    Compliance

Each organization as set of compliance requirements, which can be based on their business vertical such as BFSI, oil and gas etc. Or based on which part of the world your business is registered to. Or which region you are operating. Or may be some are only company specific.

vROPs has capability of remediating compliance drifts automatically (with proper access).

How to deploy VMware vRealize Operations Manager?

    1) In order to start deployment we will login to SDDC manager.

    2) Click on vRealize Suite tab on left hand side and select option deploy vRealize operations.

    3) Now you should have vRealize lifecycle manager login with vcfadmin@local credentials and you will be presented with the screen below click on Locker.

    4) In certificates section click on generate option.

    5) Fill in all the details of new certificate which will be used for vrops deployment.

    6) Click on nav bar, located at the top right hand side and choose Lifecycle Operations.

    7) Now click on create environment.

    8) Provide Environment name, select default password and datacenter, click next.

    9) Select product vRealize Operations and click next.

    10) Accept end user license agreement, click next.

    11) Select/add a valid license. Click on select or add based action you wish to perform. I already had a license added hence I clicked on select.

    12) Choose applicable license.

    13) Click on validate association, and click next.

    14) Select the certificate we created initially and click next.

    15) Review infrastructure details.

    16) Review network details.

    17) Provide appliance details.

    18) Complete the pre-checks, move next once done.

    19) Review summary and start deployment, incase you do not wish to run pre-checks again switch off radio button and click submit.

    20) Let all the phases to complete.

Congratulations, now you have completed successful vrops deployment.

In my next post Step-by-step VMware Cloud Foundation 4.3 design and install vRLI I will show you how to deploy vRealize log insight in VMware cloud foundation environment.

I hope I was able to add value, if your answer is yes, then don't forget to share and follow. 😊
